How to make modifications for games in general
Are you a self-proclaimed modder who wants a good general framework on
making game modifications? Or perhaps you are just starting to get
interested in modifying games yourself?
Regardless of your skill level,
this article will show you the general steps and hints on how to make
modifications
for games.
Why only modify games?
You can do so much more with games than modify them.
I recommend seeing the
online
video course "How to Make Money from Video Games" to find out how you can make
real money from games.

What are game modifications?
Simply put, game modifications are collections of one or more files that
modify video games in some manner. They are typically called
“mods”. Mods can be as small as changing the
characteristics of a player’s weapon to full-blown total conversions
that modify almost the entire game while still using the game engine.
Steps to making your own modification
The specifics of the mod’s design would vary from game to game, so
I have provided the general steps for making your own mod. I will use my
recent mod for the game Tiberian Sun that I call “Space
Marines versus Tau” as an example.
1. Find out how to modify the game you are working with. This
would include looking up on the internet the tools and files required
to modify the game.
The game I was working with used a series of .mix and .ini files to
work out how all the parts of the game function. After I learned that
is was simply a matter of finding the tool that could modify those
files and save them into the game’s folder.
2. Write down exactly what your mod’s all about. Open up a
word document and basically write about what modifications you are making
to the game; include all necessary details such as weapon design, gameplay
etc.
3. Backup the original game files that you will modify. Once you
have finished modifying the game you can restore it back to its
original state from the backed up files.
In the case of my modification, I only had to backup the rules.ini
and ai.ini which are easy to move back once finished.
4. Make a functioning version of your modification. A
functioning version means that you have implemented the majority of the
mod’s design. This should also mean that the modified game can run
without too many problems.
For my modification, I only added in the basic stuff like new soldiers,
vehicles and aircraft before advancing to the next step.
5. Create a site for the modification. Depending on the scale and
number of people working on the mod, the site can be something like a
separate forum on another (or your own) site for your mod or it could
have its own website with its own domain.
For creating web pages I have continually used Antechinus JavaScript Editor. This amazing tool
has many useful functions and is the perfect web tool for beginners and
professional web designers alike.
6. Test and improve your modification for gameplay imbalances and
program errors, and add in more stuff as necessary. This is probably the
hardest part of making a modification, which involves optimising the mod
for the game engine and removing as many bugs, imbalances and errors as
possible. You should at least test the mod yourself continually or try to
get like-minded people to test your modification and give you feedback as
you develop it.
For my mod I tested most of it myself and once I ironed out all the big
imbalances and errors that I could find I released the mod in it’s
entirety to the general public to download, and to provide feedback.
Some last-minute game modification tips
-If you are a beginner then you should start small, and then
build up from there. I myself have started several large-scale mods only to
eventually lose interest in them.
-Make the modification fun, AND balanced. The idea behind game modding
is to have fun of course, but that fun can be ruined if a player discovers
program loopholes and gameplay bugs to use against other players.
-Plan and then execute. You’ll find that the end goal of the
modification will be unclear at best unless you have a plan.
