What is CamStudio?

CamStudio is a small free screen capture program that can record screen activity as well as sound from either the speakers or the microphone.

It also has additional features such as recording to SWF and adding things to the videos such as annotations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of CamStudio

CamStudio is free, compact and easy to use. It contains many of the regular capture features of other screen capture tools.

Also, certain games cannot be recorded correctly with other screen capture tools. This is especially prevalent in older games such as Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun. CamStudio on the other hand records older games with relative ease.

This tool also takes up a minimum amount of memory and processing power to run because of its compact design.

CamStudio still lacks some of the additional features that are available within other screen capture programs. The tool cannot capture sound from the microphone and speakers at the same time for example.

This tool also lacks certain game-related features such as monitoring frames-per-second within the game that capture tools such as Fraps contain.

How to Use CamStudio for Your Game

This tool is best used to capture games in full-screen mode.

These are the general steps to capturing video from a game:

1. Go to the Options menu and set the program to record from speakers. To finetune settings for the audio use the Audio Options sub menu.

2. Under the Options menu go to Keyboard Shortcuts and set the desired keys to get the capture to start and stop.

3. Run the game, and use the shortcuts to start and stop the capture when needed.

4. That’s it!

That’s the amazing thing about this tool: It’s easy to use but provides some advanced options if necessary.
