What is Fraps?

Fraps is a compact video capture program that is specifically designed for recording videos from games. Fraps can also record audio from the games themselves at the same time.
This tool also contains extra features that are specific to games.
Fraps is a commercial product, with the unregistered version offering 30 seconds of recording time along with placing a watermark on the final video.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Fraps
Fraps is a specialised game videos tool. It is designed around recording video from games, and so all of its features are related to recording videos specifically from this type of software.
As a result Fraps delivers the smoothest videos possible when recording games, and also has additional benchmarking features. These features can be used to measure the performance of games.
Unfortunately Fraps also costs money in order to bring out its true potential. You can download a free version of the product but it restricts you to 30 seconds of recording and places a watermark within the videos.
Given its specialised nature, Fraps lacks many general features that more common screen capture tools would contain.
In short you can expect Fraps to do a good job of recording videos from your games, but not much else.
How to Use Fraps for Your Game
Fraps is a very easy tool to use when recording videos from your games.
These are the general steps to capturing video from a game:
1. Go to the Movies tab and set the target frame rate for your movie. This is the frame rate that the final video will play on. The size option indicates whether the movie will be full resolution or half of the game’s current resolution.

2. When recording sound, make sure to check “Detect best sound input” for the best results.
3. Run your game. You’ll notice that there is a FPS (Frames per Second) counter on the corner. This counter will not be recorded in the movie.
4. While playing the game press the Video Capture Hotkey when you are ready to start recording. The FPS counter will turn red when recording.
5. To stop recording, press the button again. The movie is then saved into your default folder.
6. Use other tools to convert the saved video into a more manageable format.
On a side note this tool can also be used to record screenshots from games.
Last Minute Hint: Use the FPS Tab within Fraps to manage the FPS overlay within the game and to control the benchmarking feature.
